Interview with Sarah J. Maas

Sarah J. Maas lives in Southern California, and over the years, she has developed an unhealthy appreciation for Disney movies and bad pop music. She adores fairy tales and ballet, drinks too much coffee, and watches absolutely rubbish TV shows. When she's not busy writing YA fantasy novels, she can be found exploring the California coastline.

Her debut YA epic fantasy novel, THRONE OF GLASS, will be published by Bloomsbury on August 7th, 2012.

THE INTERVIEW

1.      Tell us a little about yourself? Maybe something juicy.
Something juicy? Oh, man. I wish I had something juicy to tell you about myself. In a nutshell, I grew up in NYC, moved to California right after college, and I’ve been living there ever since (with my husband and dog). I’m 26, I drink too much coffee, I love watching TV, and I’m prone to eating nutella right out of the jar. ;)

2.     What do you do when you're not writing or reading?
TV. Oh, I watch so much TV it’s disgusting. I also love traveling, and the ballet, and trying new kinds of food. Honestly, if I have a night off from writing, you can usually find me eating pizza and drinking a beer. I’m pretty laid back.

3.     If you're going to live on a stranded desert island, name 3 books you'll bring with you.
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (so beautiful and heartbreaking), the omnibus edition of Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels Trilogy (ha! I’m cheating with that one), and Lloyd Alexander’s Taran Wanderer (since I don’t think there’s an omnibus edition of his Prydain Chronicles out there).

4.     Can you tell me a bit about your process of writing?
Well, it changes with each book. Sometimes, I like to have the whole book planned out in my head before I begin writing it. Other times, I’ll write it by the seat of my pants, making it up as I go. And other times, I’ll have a detailed outline to guide me each step of the way. Usually, though, my process is like this: wake up, drink coffee, catch up on emails, and then write for the rest of the day. Pretty boring, huh? I guess my only bit of craziness is the fact that I like to have a mirror hanging behind my desk, so I can look at myself/my expressions as I act out scenes.

5.     Why do you write and what do you hope to achieve with your writing?
Why do I write? Because I have to. Because I’d go crazy if I didn’t get all the stories out of my head. Because NOT writing has never been an option.
As for what I hope to achieve… I just want to write stories I love with my whole heart and soul—and hope that those stories are ones that other people can love, too.

6.     What are you working on at the moment?
Book Two of the Throne of Glass series! I’m in the middle of revisions, which means that I’m pretty much living in yoga pants and a sweatshirt, and showers are optional. :P

7.     Of all the characters in the Throne of Glass series, who do you feel you're most alike? Who is your favorite?
Oooh, tough question. I’m going to say that Celaena is my favorite. She’s the reason why I’ve kept with this story for so long. When I was sixteen and began writing this series, I put a lot of myself into her, but over the years, she became very much her own person (to the point where we only have a few things in common now). But I also adore writing Chaol’s character—and, recently, I fell in love with Ansel (a character from the second ToG novella, The Assassin and the Desert). I really hope I get a chance to write more about Ansel in later books (or possibly novellas)!

8.     Do you have an author that has really inspired you?
J. K. Rowling. She is a wonderful, inspiring, and incredible person—who has done SO much for children’s literature (and literature in general). Plus, writing/reading Harry Potter fanfiction was what introduced me to FanFiction.net—which later developed its site for original stories, FictionPress.com. :)

9.     How do you do research for your books?
Hmmm. Well, I do it the traditional way sometimes, by reading books/articles/source material written by very smart people. And I also do it in other non-traditional ways/forms—by watching movies, or tv, or listening to music or looking at art. “Research” and “Inspiration” go hand-in-hand for me.

10.   What is your favorite part of writing this series?
Agh. Tough question. I think what I love most is that Celaena (as a trained assassin) gets to do so many things that only guys traditionally got to do—she can slay monsters or partake in battles or just swagger about. Writing her—writing a character that never apologizes for who she is (faults and all)—has been such tremendous fun.

11.  Do you have a favorite scene or line?
Hmmm. I have many favorite scenes, but some of them are very spoiler-y. BUT I’ll just say that one of my favorite lines comes from early on in the novel, when Celaena first sees the royal library (while the Captain of the Guard is giving her a tour of the castle). She asks Chaol why there aren’t any guards watching the library, and he says that they’re of no use in a library. To which Celaena replies/thinks to herself:

‘Oh, how wrong he was! Libraries were full of ideas—perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.’

:)

Goodreads:
Emmeline Thistle has always had a mysterious bond with cows, beginning on the night of her birth, when the local bovines saved the infant cast aside to die in the forest. But Emmeline was unaware that this bond has also given her a magical ability to transform milk into chocolate, a very valuable gift in a kingdom where chocolate is more rare and more precious than gold or jewels.

Then one day Owen Oak, a dairyman’s son, teaches Emmeline to churn milk into butter—and instead she creates a delicious chocolate confection that immediately makes her a target for every greedy, power-hungry person in the kingdom of Anglund. Only Owen loves Emmeline for who she truly is, not her magical skill. But is his love enough to save her from the danger all around her?
In a departure from her contemporary teen romances, Suzanne Selfors crafts an irresistible re-imagined fairy tale that will tempt readers with a delicious story of love that is sweeter than the richest chocolate.

SO HIT OR MISS

I must say I am intrigued by this cover. The wings are ingenious aren't they. Very intriguing. They engaged the eye immediately but don't take over the whole cover. The model looks a little lost. Is that on purpose? I'm not sure. The blue is very nice on the backdrop. In comparison to the first cover in the series this is a little dull but by it's self it is very nice.  The makeup on the model is stunning. I know personally how hard it is for designs like that to come out to perfection. Very well done makeup personnel. :-)
A HIT

Review: Goddess Interrupted

Goddess Interrupted

(Goddess Test#2)

Paperback296 pages
Published March 27th 2012 by HarlequinTeen

GOODREADS SUMMARY:

KATE WINTERS HAS WON IMMORTALITY.

BUT IF SHE WANTS A LIFE WITH HENRY IN THE UNDERWORLD, SHE'LL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT.

Becoming immortal wasn't supposed to be the easy part. Though Kate is about to be crowned Queen of the Underworld, she's as isolated as ever. And despite her growing love for Henry, ruler of the Underworld, he's becoming ever more distant and secretive. Then, in the midst of Kate's coronation, Henry is abducted by the only being powerful enough to kill him: the King of the Titans.

As the other gods prepare for a war that could end them all, it is up to Kate to save Henry from the depths of Tartarus. But in order to navigate the endless caverns of the Underworld, Kate must enlist the help of the one person who is the greatest threat to her future.

Henry's first wife, Persephone.

SO HIT OR MISS

The Goddess Test was the first novel I ever reviewed on this blog. I absolutely loved that novel and I was so excited to hear that this sequel would be releasing soon. I started seeing early reviews come up and here I became conflicted. Many of my favorite bloggers were not as inthralled with this installment because of how obsessively in love with Henry Kate seemed to be. I read all about how it was the main focus of this novel and overall it seemed like this book would not be good.

But I'm glad I went ahead and picked it up anyway.

Why?

Because I Loved THIS INSTALLMENT!
Yup you heard right. This was just as good if not better than it's predecessor.

Kate returns from her spring/summer in greece to a distant husband and more drama than she was probably expecting on her first day back.

In Kate's shoes I too would have been focused on Henry's love for me as much as she is. A new marriage, Titans and Ex wives drama. I mean really!

I honestly finished Goddess interrupted in 4 hours and 20 something minutes. No lie.

It was so good and right when I think the drama is over, the ending comes up and the last page kills me!

Now I have to wait until 2013 for a conclusion to this major cliff hanger. I mean it is so unexpected that I never would have guessed. I actually re-read it! And then the little excerpt at the back featuring Henry!

I will be there opening day to get my copy. Matter fact I will be pre ordering my copy!

I'm so excited. But not just about the cliff hanger.

I'm excited to find out more about the titans and the battles and the gods! Totally Lost in the Goddess Test world!

Series Review: Raised by Wolves 1-3

Raised by Wolves (Raised by Wolves, #1)Trial by Fire (Raised by Wolves, #2)Taken by Storm (Raised by Wolves, #3)

So if you don't know already, the Raised by wolves series is about a young girl, Bryn, who is rescued and raised by wolves. She is a human adopted by the Alpha of a pack and this series follows her journey through various trials and revelations.

I absolutely LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!

I was recommended this series by a good friend of mine. So off to the library I went to gain a hold of the first two novels. Two days later I just to had to get my hands on Taken by Storm!

The characters were so engaging.  From the first page of Raised by Wolves I was trapped in a world.

Bryn is my favorite character. I love her fierceness and her curiosity. I love that even growing up surrounded by those who are stronger than her she still survives. I love how she follows through on what she decides. Generally just love love love her.

Ali is the perfect mix of everything I love in mother type characters. She is protective and moral. In Book 2, Trial by Fire you see another side to her. She's not just Bryn's mother or another human. She is pack!

Besides for awesome characters, I just love the orginality of the plot. Not only did it remain interesting and connected through each book, it also never hit any snags. The books got better with each new installment and not worse! (Thank Heavens!)

Now I feel such impatient at having to wait for the fourth installment.

Not only is this series a HIT

ITS A MUST READ NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Review: If I stay

Title: If I Stay (If I Stay #1)
 Author: by
Paperback, 234 pages
Published April 6th 2010 by Speak

Summary GR:
A critically acclaimed novel that will change the way you look at life, love, and family.

In the blink of an eye everything changes. Seventeen year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall what happened afterwards, watching her own damaged body being taken from the wreck. Little by little she struggles to put together the pieces- to figure out what she has lost, what she has left, and the very difficult choice she must make. Heartwrenchingly beautiful, Mia's story will stay with you for a long, long time.

SO HIT OR MISS
To start off I just have to say this is the most influential and powerful book I have read all year. As many of you know I am a emotional reader/person. I was so completely over come while reading this book. I never went more than 20 pages without shedding tears.
This book was so skillfully written. It follows the spirit of a girl named Mia who tragedy has struck. Mia slowly discovers where she is what happens and is faced with a choice.
While reading this book  I cried alot. I fell in love. I was wracked with unfathomable sadness and grief.
This story really is the most touching stories I have ever come across.

One of my favorite aspects of this story was the sheer complexity in all of the characters featured in this book. Everyone had a story to tell and each story was told well without over shadowing one over the other. I loved Mia's grandparents and the role they played through out the book. From Mia's bestfriend to Mia's Cello instructer, Everything written built more upon this classic story.

And even with all this tragedy and sadness the major theme I found was Life. Everyone's life. The art of living. Oh My GOSH! I can't even put into words how much this story means to me now.
I am so thankful to have picked up this book and read it. The tears were worth it.

HIT!

Caterpillar Blog Tour: The Writing Nook

The Writing Nook

I was just reading Maggie Stiefvater's blog the other day and had a major pang of jealousy.  No, no, not of her bestseller status.  Of her office.  It's fabulous.  There are bookcases that go all the way to the ceiling, with those nifty wooden ladders you used to see in Borders before it went belly-up.  And there's no photo of it, but I bet there's even a door.  With a lock.

Someday, I hope to have an office of my very own, with a door.  For now, My writing nook is on a corner of my kitchen counter (honestly, I spend so much time in my kitchen, either writing or cooking, that when my kids can't find me there they freak out.)

Pic1.jpg

Normally there's a chair, but someone seems to have run off with it here. Probably using it to get the cookies off the top shelf of the pantry. Possibly it was me.

Fortunately, it does have a nice view of the woods.

Pic2.jpg

Occasionally I see Bambi out there, or a fox, or a hawk.  Once there was also something I swear was an R.O.U.S., but still.  It's nice.

Also, there's artwork.

And if I get hungry, the fridge is behind me.

In My Mailbox #4 and update

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren to spotlight what books we've received for the week.

This is a few weeks in one because as you know I have just finished participating in  Armchair BEA, which was wonderful. I have a small haul this week, just three books!

Trial by Fire (Raised by Wolves, #2)

Trial by Fire (Raised by Wolves #2)

SO I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Raised By Wolves. I just had to get the sequel!

Here's the Goodreads Summary:
Bryn is finally settling into her position as alpha of the Cedar Ridge Pack—or at least, her own version of what it means to be alpha when you’re a human leading a band of werewolves. Then she finds a teenage boy bleeding on her front porch. Before collapsing, he tells her his name is Lucas, he’s a Were, and Bryn’s protection is his only hope.

But Lucas isn’t part of Bryn’s pack, and she has no right to claim another alpha’s Were.  With threats—old and new—looming, and danger closing in from all sides, Bryn will have to accept what her guardian Callum knew all along. To be alpha, she will have to give in to her own animal instincts and become less human. And, she’s going to have to do it alone.

Bryn faces both the costs, and the rewards, of love and loyalty, in this thrilling sequel to Raised by Wolves

Following my need for sequels I also picked up Vanish (Firelight #2)
Vanish (Firelight, #2)

Goodreads says:

An impossible romance.
Bitter rivalries.
Deadly choices.

To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

This last book I picked up on a whim, I just liked the title but it sounds interesting so we'll see! Besides I met Daniel Handler and loved him!!!!!!!!!!!! Although I never really got into the whole unfortunate events series, I still loved the ones I read.

Why We Broke Up

Why We Broke Up

by

Goodreads:

I'm telling you why we broke up, Ed. I'm writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened.

Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.

So i'm officially off of my blogging funk! ^_^

I decided that obsessively worrying about blogging and reviewing and meme's were making the whole experience un-fun. So I've cut back my meme's and just gonna have fun reading and reviewing!!!! Armchair BEA really helped me see that! Last week was so fun.

Anyway so look out for reviews!
