Review: Ten things we did (and probably shouldn't have)

Summary:

2 girls + 3 guys + 1 house – parents = 10 things April and her friends did that they (definitely, maybe, probably) shouldn't have.

If given the opportunity, what sixteen-year-old wouldn't jump at the chance to move in with a friend and live parent-free? Although maybe "opportunity" isn't the right word, since April had to tell her dad a tiny little untruth to make it happen (see #1: "Lied to Our Parents"). But she and her housemate Vi are totally responsible and able to take care of themselves. How they ended up "Skipping School" (#3), "Throwing a Crazy Party" (#8), "Buying a Hot Tub" (#4), and, um, "Harboring a Fugitive" (#7) at all is kind of a mystery to them.

In this hilarious and bittersweet tale, Sarah Mlynowski mines the heart and mind of a girl on her own for the first time. To get through the year, April will have to juggle a love triangle, learn to do her own laundry, and accept that her carefully constructed world just might be falling apart . . . one thing-she-shouldn't-have-done at a time.

So Hit or Miss

Before I talk about how much an enjoyable book this was. I want to talk about what an important book this is for teenagers.

Unlike some, I am a full support of sex and sexual situations in Y.A. books, or any books really. There are a lot of teens out there who could learn a lot from this book. There are numerous young adults who still do not practice safe sexual practices for the sheer fact that like April. They don't think about consequences. This book told a story that I think teens should be exposed too.

That aside this was a really fun and enjoyable read. I also love the moral lessons through out the book. Although she had a lot of fun she did a lot of bad things. But, she learned from her mistakes and even confesses... abet much later. 

I like how April finds herself throughout this novel. She is growing in front of our eyes. Her roommate Vi, is a very captivating character just because of her personality. Though wild she is also very responsible (that is mostly because she grew up having to be the responsible one.).

I hate Noah... that's all I can say without spoiling the book.

Male characters were hot in abundance. Actually all the character interactions were well written and entertaining.

I also love how the dynamics of relationships are played in this story. (don't want to spoil)

Summary: New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned. 

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes. 

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back. 

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different. 

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

So Hit or Miss

I wanted to know what Article 5 was. That was the reason I picked this book up in B&N. I didn't care much about what the rest of the story would turn out to be at all. I just wanted know what Article 5 was. Plain and Simple. But then I did something. I read the first chapter.

Too late, I was hooked! I loved every word in Article 5. I was immediately thrown into the mist of the story. Once I found out about the Article 5 violations I couldn't just stop reading. I was to involved in the adventure that was starting. I was too distraught because of the injustice of this new world. 

I was angry, fearful, sad, every emotion you could think of. I could see the adrenaline just pouring into these pages as Ember embarked further into her adventure.

I completely swooned over Chase. He is the type of character I can appreciate. Dynamic, strong, engaging and hot! His interactions with Ember are both sweet and heart wrenching on occasion. I mean what would you do if the only thing you had left was locked away? Go get her of course. He's trying so hard to protect in the only way he can, but of course he's a guy and well he should have spent a little more time explaining instead of doing.

Ember is at sometimes singularly focused though with good reason. Her character really grows by the end of the novel. I feel for her. She has to deal with so much and she just wants her mom and her old chase. It takes her awhile to realize everything isn't going to be the same. I loved how determined she was. She has all the good qualities of a heroine. She related to me alot. Especially if I had been in that same situation. 

Overall.... Wow! I loved the concept of this dystopian novel. This is honestly a book I would re-read, which rarely happens

SO HIT OR MISS


I love the concept for this cover. Simple but well stated. Anyone picking up this book will know somehow prom went from bad to worse and someone ends up in the 'pockey'. I love the model's resigned look that is etched on her face. I'm also very interested in where they got those shoe's! I love that they went for a more princess style prom dress. It says a lot about the character. You can tell someones personality by their style choices. If this model had been dressed in a slinky little red number it would have a completely different. I want to know how exactly prom night turned into jail night and this cover is absolutely awesome!
